More times then not, we attempt to make a small space in our home the catch-all:
- Home Office
- Guest Room
- Play Room
- Storage Room
Try these tips to make a small space appear roomier. |
Add Details… Wood moldings & wallpaper borders help move the eye upward, creating an illusion of volume.
- Windows…Keep it simple and transmit natural light when possible. Opt for fabric sheers and panels, white shutters or semitransparent shades.
- Color… Cool colors often help a room appear larger. However, sometimes a room is so small color won’t make that much difference. In these situations opt for a darker color which may produce a feeling of intimacy, but keep the ceiling a light shade.
- Fabrics…Stick with visual simplicity and limit your number of hues. You can still mix patterns, but this way you won’t overwhelm the space with too much color. Keep throw pillows to a minimum to avoid a cluttered look.
- Furniture…
Select furniture that’s multipurpose. Sofa sleepers, trunks that double as a coffee table and ottomans offering added storage space are useful.
- Mirrors…Use mirrors to make a small space look larger. Be sure to place the mirrors so that they reflect the room’s best features.
- Artwork…Don’t center your artwork. Pieces hung off center cause your eye to focus on something other than the small size of the room.
- Sound…The art of distraction! If you find the sound of a fountain relaxing, affix a wall mount fountain outside the room’s wall or window, on the room’s balcony or even a desk top fountain, which won’t take up much space, will do the trick.
